This summer MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S. A. is taking over five sister ships from South-Korean yard, with a cargo capacity of 23 656 TEU each. The line of these vessels can be surely called among the largest containerships in the world. One of them – MSC Nelа – will be placed in management of MSC Shipmanagement Limited, Cyprus. As Group Managing Director & CEO Mr. Prabhat Jha explained, thereby the company expresses its appreciation to Ukrainian seafarers for their trust, loyalty and hard work on the MSC fleet.
“Our company established the Ukraine branch office 11 years ago and at first, we placed Ukrainian Seafarers on small vessels with approximate cargo capacity of 2000 TEU,” he commented. “Since that time, Odesa office has fulfilled all expectations, and Ukrainian seafarers proved themselves as qualified specialists of their craft. Then MSC Shipmanagement started to invest in professional training of Ukrainians, as well as to develop a range of soft skills and leadership qualities. We also familiarized seafarers with the culture of the company and tried to form one big family. We are really satisfied with such cohesion and cordial relationships which have been established between the shore-office and seafarers.”
Mr. Prabhat Jha also mentioned that starting from the next month MSC Shipmanagement LTD. is putting three Korean newbuilding’s, with cargo capacity of 14 000 TEU each, in operation and will be manned by crew from MSC Crewing Services Ukraine.
MSC Nela, with the length of 400 m, width – 61 m and draft – 16 m, will become a gem of the fleet. The ship’s trade will be from the ports of China through the Suez Canal in Northern Europe and the Nordics. MSC Nela will set sail from the yard on its maiden voyage totally manned with Ukrainian seafarers.
A mega containership can speak about a few technological novelties. Besides an electronic engine, MSC Nela is equipped with an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System in compliance with the IMO 2020 convention requirements. The ship is also fitted with new equipment for the cargo safety in case of fire.
MSC Nela is not the first record of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S. A. in terms of cargo capacity of containerships. In 2015 the company took delivery of MSC Oscar (19 224 TEU), which got a title of the largest containership of that time.
MSC Nela among the largest containership delivery in management of Ukrainian branch is a major step for our seafarers. However, the company as well as Group Managing Director & CEO Mr. Prabhat Jha, are sure that they can cope with such challenges.
